Experience Helps

Entering the rail engineering industry relies on a number of determinants, experience, as always, is key. New entrants to the area are expected to have experience and qualifications in a relevant field such as a mechanical fitter, signalling, electrician or craftsperson. Past experience with a rail engineering firm is ideal but, for new entrants time spent in any form of engineering is vital.

What Qualifications do I Need?

There are a number of NVQ’s available directly related to the rail industry including: Electrical Maintenance, Traction and Rolling Stock, Track Maintenance and Signalling Maintainer among others. Picking these up qualifications will only help when it comes to entering the industry.

Once you start your career journey in rail, you may have to complete a medical – while you’re not expected to be any sort of athlete you will be tested on eyesight, hearing and physical fitness. Engineering in any form is strenuous and ensuring you’re up for the task prior to facing a medical will help tremendously.
