One of the most prominent roles we see within our Power Division is for Health & Safety Advisor, both across the UK and overseas, but what does the role entail?

As a health and safety adviser or officer, you would use your knowledge and skills to reduce injuries, accidents and health problems in the workplace. If you have an eye for detail and love problem solving, this could be the ideal career for you to take.

The role of a Health & Safety Advisor;

The role is heavily focused on prevention; ensuring that all Health & Safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations are adhered to and are regularly reviewed, updated and communicated to the company internally and externally.

The role requires the following tasks day-to-day;

  • Ensure a safe workplace environment without risk to health
  • Carry out risk assessments, considering how risks could be reduced
  • Outline safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards
  • Review sub-contractors for compliance to company requirements
  • Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented, including fire drills
  • Make changes to working practices that are safe and comply with legislation
  • Assist in preparing health and safety strategies and developing internal policy
  • Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks
  • Keep records of inspection findings and producing reports that suggest improvements
  • Ensure that all accidents are documented, investigated and recommended improvements implemented
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE)  legislation and any developments that affect the company
  • Assist in managing and organising the safe disposal of hazardous substances
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases
  • Liaise with suppliers ~ Insurers, solicitors etc.

It would be your aim to prevent accidents, injuries and health problems in the workplace. You would create health and safety policies, and make sure that employers and workers put them into practice and follow safety laws.

Depending on your employer, your work could cover areas such as fire safety, occupational health, noise, safe use of machinery and control of hazardous substances.

Qualifications;

Usually require a H&S Degree across most sectors, as well as extensive experience within the core sector you are applying for (standard is minimum of 5 years) as well as NEBOSH qualifications.

Working Hours;

Typical working hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. In some industries your hours could be more irregular. You may work shifts or be on call in case of emergencies or accidents.

You would normally be based in an office, although you could also spend time in workplaces like factories or building sites, depending on the industry you work in.

Salary;

Our vacancies usually range between £35,000 – 50,000 per annum in the UK.
