A telecoms technician will oversee a company’s telecommunication networks. This includes cable, Internet, telephones, and some office equipment. They can be responsible for the repair, maintenance, installation, and planning of systems too.
A telecoms technician typically belongs to an IT team or telecommunication team. They will report to a supervisor or a manager.
There are a number of different responsibilities that a telecoms technician has. This includes installing and maintaining systems, as well as testing, troubleshooting and repairing systems.
As a telecoms technician, some of the core skills that you are expected to have include an ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, i.e. lifting, bending, and standing for the duration of your shift. You will also need to have customer service experience, strong computer skills, basic diagnostic skills, and knowledge in numerous telecommunications practices and systems.
Other skills that are not a necessity but can certainly give you an advantage include familiarity with OSHA safety standards and certifications such as NEC and Mitel.
