£2.61 million Leeds railway station gets the green light

The green light has been given for a new Leeds railway station worth £2.61 million. Funding was approved in November 2019 by West Yorkshire Combined Authority's Investment Committee, but now things can start moving at White Rose.

When completed, the railway will be used by an estimated 340,000 passengers annually, with a minimum of two trains per hour in each direction guaranteed.

The new station would be located in south Leeds on the Leeds to Dewsbury section of the main trans-Pennine rail line, and will serve the White Rose Office Park, including Elliott Hudson College, and the White Rose Shopping Centre. It would also connect communities including Cottingley, Churwell, Middleton and Millshaw.

The plans cover the construction of a two-platform station as well as associated infrastructure. The platforms would be designed for six carriage trains, with space to expand to accommodate eight-car trains in the future.

A pair of three-storey station buildings are proposed at either side of the railway line, together with canopy walkways, pick-up and drop-off, disabled parking spaces and cycle parking.

With more than 340,000 trips per year forecast it has been estimated that it could support the creation of 10,000 jobs.

A planning officer's report accompanying the decision said: "The proposal would provide an opportunity for the growth of a sustainable transport mode that would facilitate the growth of the local economy and local existing and future residential communities.

"The end use of the proposed station is considered to be a 'destination station' with a perceived 340,000 passengers in the first year. The station will not only serve local residential estates but the White Rose Office Park (which includes education facilities and employment uses), together with the White Rose Shopping Centre and the residential estates to the east of the retail centre." Full story.
