Industry News

As we continue to see the lockdown restrictions slowly continue to lift we wanted to offer some insight into the current jobs market across the Construction, Civils, Power, Telecoms and Rail sectors. We caught up with our business leaders across all of these sectors to ask for their opinion and thoughts on the current situation.

POWER & TELECOMS SECTOR

James Turner, Director of Power & Telecoms division commented: “The Power and energy sector is seeing strong demand for jobs as we continue to move out of lockdown, offices reopen and we see people active in the jobs market as we move through Q1.

Clients have experienced significant changes to the way they engage a contingent workforce due to the IR35 changes, which has brought about new methods and processes.

The government’s continued commitment to wind, nuclear and smart infrastructure is driving demand and we are seeing a strong demand for permanent hires.”

If your business operates in the Power & Telecoms sector and you want to discuss your recruitment needs or would like a more in-depth discussion about how we can help you and your business attract the very best talent in the sector, please speak to James Turner on 01302 246 063 or email him on James.Turner@navartis.co.uk. CONSTRUCTION & CIVILS SECTOR

Melonie Debenham, Director of Construction & Civils division commented: “Since the Government’s plan to ease lockdown restrictions we have seen a very positive rebound in-terms of jobs being created across the UK construction and civils sectors, with permanent opportunities in particular. This is very positive news, however it will be important to navigate the skills gap to ensure this momentum continues.

I have no doubt that as the skills gap widens we will start to see salaries and rates creep up, but businesses will also need to be creative about their approach to attracting and retaining their talent. This is an area where business will get huge value from working closely with a recruitment agency to help ensure they are ahead of their competitors to ensure they can engage and hire the best talent in the market.”

RAIL SECTOR

Warren Drobac, Director of Rail division commented:”As the dust begins to settle on the IR35 reforms and life is heading back towards some semblance of normality, the Rail sector is starting to see a surge in demand for both permanent and contract hires.

With project delays due to COVID back in 2020, these delayed works are now coming online in what is likely to be one of the most buoyant periods over the next few years in terms of rail infrastructure spend with CP6 works getting well and truly underway, in addition to HS2, TRU and East West Rail starting to gather some pace. After a very challenging 12 months the future looks bright for the rail sector.”

CONSTRUCTION SECTOR (LONDON & SOUTH EAST)

Karl O’Callaghan, Director of London and South East region commented: “Construction sector is starting to pick up again and the pipeline of projects is looking positive. The sectors that are seeing strong growth are as follows, Private Residential, Social Housing, Student Accommodation, Food Retail and Industrial/Warehouse.

The freelance market is steady at the moment with the majority of clients being cautious around the new IR35 legislation, but I see freelance requirements starting to increase from May onwards. Perm job orders are coming through at a regular rate, which is positive and it shows that clients are positive about the future to have the confidence to recruit perm staff. Salaries and pay rates are stabilising and show no signs of decreasing or increasing in the near future.

There are still skill shortages in certain disciplines especially Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors and Planners. Overall the market is positive and I am positive about the rest of 2021 and 2022.”
