Your overall happiness and well-being in the workplace are important for your work-life balance and for reducing stress levels. Below are some reasons which might be affecting how happy and ‘settled’ you are at work. Whilst it won’t give all the answers about what causes unhappiness at work it may help you pin-point a few of them.

Being unhappy at work isn’t helpful for you, your team, your colleagues or the wider business; it’s not something to ignore.

Try to determine what it is exactly that’s making you feel down at work. Common issues include a too heavy or a too light workload, conflict with a colleague or a missed promotion and / or pay rise. It’s important to pinpoint what your frustrations are and where they are coming from so you can work to resolve them.

Career development

Are you receiving training and do you feel like you’re constantly developing? Or, have you asked for training and development on things that just doesn’t seem to be happening? Statistics show that a high percentage of employees feel much more engaged and happier about their role and workplace if they have a clear career development route and an employer that supports them in getting there through training and mentorship. If this isn’t something you have, speak to your Line Manager to ask for additional support and training.

Reward and Recognition

If you’re working hard and achieving great results but you’re still not being rewarded with that pay rise, promotion or even with any form of recognition, despite being promised these things; this can be a real de-motivator and a big cause for unhappiness and disengagement from your role. Speak to your Line Manager about how you’re feeling and look for a solution. You’ve worked hard, don’t throw it all away by becoming negative. There maybe external factors that have affected what is now possible and a conversation around what can happen moving forward could straighten everything out and help give you clarity and peace of mind.

Thinking Positive

It can be difficult sometimes however you’re not helping yourself, your team or your employer by focusing on the negatives and it’s important you stay professional. If you begin to feel emotions of anger or upset whilst in the workplace, remove yourself from the situation for 5 minutes by going outside for some fresh air. Think about your approach from a less emotional place and you will make better decisions for it. We’ve all been in a situation before when we have lost our temper and wish we could rewind and act differently once we have calmed down. Try to remember this and not to bring your colleagues in to what you are feeling in that moment. You will inadvertently become a source of negativity in the team and thus the perception to those around you will be exactly that – You’re being Negative! Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
Speak with family and friends about the situation away from the office environment to gain some objectivity. We sometimes need this to realise we may have been thinking about things in a negative way simply because we’ve had a tough week.

Talk to your manager

Your Line Manager should be your first point of contact for any issues you have in the work place. Sometimes this can be difficult but if you are genuinely unhappy and your Manager has yet to notice or realise you should bring it to their attention. If you are going to do this, plan your approach and conversation. Write down the things you want to discuss beforehand as this will help you feel more in control and prevent you from getting upset or angry. A calm and coherent conversation will always lead the way. Many things that cause unhappiness in the work place can be put down to lack of communication or miscommunication. You may find many of your issues can be resolved almost immediately after speaking with your Manager.

Time for a new job?

Perhaps it’s time to move on. If you’ve raised concerns several times before and nothing has been satisfactorily settled, chances are that bringing it up again will produce the same result. It simply maybe that they don’t have the capacity to promote you no matter how hard you work or the results you achieve; They may not be able to give you a pay rise, or hire anyone else to share an increasing work load.
